Drawn by hand
Inspired by scenes that stay with me
Every piece of artwork begins as I’m reading the book and a scene captures my attention. I sketch out the idea in Procreate on my iPad, starting with the initial composition and line work before gradually building up the details.
Once the line work is complete, I bring the illustration to life with colour, layering in shading, highlights and finer details until the final artwork takes shape.
The process is intentionally detailed, with each illustration taking an average of 30 hours to complete. Every finished illustration is an original work created specifically for each edition, making each design a personal part of the book.
From the very first sketch to the final details, every line and layer is drawn by me.
Inside the book
Every Gold Foil Book opens with an original endpaper at the front and another at the back. These are the two inside A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Built to match
Each edition is designed to coordinate with the last, so the series reads as one object across four spines. Matching editions are added over time.
Meet the maker
Gold Foil Books started in 2025 with a fabric-covered rebind of ACOTAR. Fabric covers were the obvious starting point, but I wanted to bring my own art into the book, not just wrap it. So I started illustrating the covers myself, drawing the characters and scenes straight from the story I was binding. I’m Dani, a self-taught bookbinder and digital artist based in Wollongong, Australia, working from a home studio.
Every illustration is hand-drawn in Procreate, and every rebind is crafted by hand with care, using premium materials and meticulous attention to detail. I believe the stories we love deserve to be celebrated.
